Matjaž Pust, Director of the Lipica Stud Farm and Andrej Engelman, representative of the Government Office for European Affairs, signed the agreement for the establishment of the Lipizzaner Museum. The museum is going to find its domain in the protected venues of the old manor complex. The management is trying, with placing new contents to the ancient buildings, to bring the stud farm back some of its old fame and to enrich the offer for the tourists who want to find out more about the history of this historical site. The museum is expected to open its door in 2011. The value of the project is approximately 800.000 EUR, 85% of the whole is going to be covered through the EEA Grants.
The stud farm in Lipica is not only of national importance, it is well known all over the world. It was founded in 1580 and it is still one of the most important cultural and historical monuments in Slovenia. The Lipizzaner breed has built its exceptional reputation due to its characteristics which include: elegance, docility, endurance and a moderate nature. The history of Lipica is closely intertwined with the Habsburgs who ruled over an extensive part of baroque Europe and relied upon the use of horses. Lipica also provided stallions for the Viennese court and the riding school that was established in Vienna in 1735.
